HOW
ARE GMOs
CREATED?
By applying complex laboratory techniques, there are various ways
of inserting genes into other organisms.
For plants, one possible method is to use a specific bacterium,
Agrobacterium spp, which can penetrate into plant cells and thus
'infect' the DNA of the plant.
Another method is to literally blast the DNA into the plant cell
by using granules of tungsten or gold and a DNA gun.
For animal cells, the DNA to be implanted is usually injected into
the nucleus of a fertilised egg cell by means of a micro-syringe
needle. |
