Biotechnology can play an important role in this.
For example, fat and protein degrading enzymes in washing products
ensure that the washing is cleaned even at lower temperatures, resulting
in a considerable reduction in energy consumption. Work is also
ongoing on the enzymatic preparation of the raw material for nylon,
and to develop a type of polyester on the basis of glucose.
