Biotechnology should offer consumers products with new nutritional
properties. So, in the future, biotechnology could bring some
considerable changes to the world of food and considerably improve
public health.Safety for consumers, industry’s number one
priority
For the food and drink industry the safety of products is a precondition
to marketing or using any food product or ingredient. Genetically
modified organisms are not an exception. All new categories of
GMOs are subject to extremely meticulous testing in order to ensure
that they do not present any risk of allergies or any other risk
on health or on the environment.
Prior to any authorisation, EU expert committees, completely trusted
by the CIAA, carry out independent risk assessments. Within the
context of future regulation, industry believes that this is an
inherent responsibility for the new European Food Safety Authority.
